Book MURDER AT THE CASTLE a cozy murder mystery full of twists (Dorothy Martin Mystery Book 13) Review :

I've enjoyed all of the books in the Dorothy Martin series, and as a classical musician myself, I especially looked forward to this one. Its setting, a music festival performed in a Welsh castle, forms an excellent backdrop for the mystery, and the singers and instrumentalists are very much front and center in the mystery. Dorothy Martin and her husband, retired policeman Alan Nesbitt, are visiting Wales and are welcomed there by the owners of a B & B, who (according to the author's note) are real people. I thought this feature was an interesting departure from what one normally finds in cozies, where characters are usually entirely fictional. Another interesting point was the cameo appearance of Penny Brannigan, the sleuth from Elizabeth J. Duncan's mystery series in which Ms. Brannigan is a young Canadian who has relocated to a Welsh town. Elizabeth Duncan and Jeanne Dams have exchanged cameo appearances by their sleuths in the last few mysteries they have written, and I thought this one was nicely done.In other ways, I was slightly disappointed with this book. The last few Dorothy Martin mysteries seem to show a less appealing side of Dorothy: she is testy at times, somewhat snide with her comments, and rather secretive, even with her husband Alan. As in other recent books, they are away from their home, and readers must begin to wonder if they ever will go back there. Each book takes place in a new location, and their home seems to have been abandoned while they explore the sights in each new location. Each time, this situation results in numerous meals in pubs and cups of tea which tend to stall the action. The musical detail was well-done, but I do agree with another reviewer that if one isn't familiar with the compositions and with concert performances, it could become tedious. The weakness of the book for me was in its scattered finish. The plot seemed to disintigrate into many pieces, and for me it just didn't recover.Normally I would recommend reading earlier books in a series before continuing with the newer ones, but in this case I don't think it matters. The recent Dorothy Martin books are different from the earlier ones and can easily stand alone. This one features Alan Nesbitt more centrally than Dorothy herself. Dorothy Martin just isn't quite as likeable as she one was, which seems a pity.
I've often wanted to visit Wales. But not this way. Dorothy and Alan are invited to accompany friends Nigel and Inga to a music festival held at a medieval castle. As often the case, where Dorothy goes murder will follow. While there were more characters to keep track of than my brain could handle, it was still a good story with lots of surprises.
